Twitter Trademarks Tweets and Gets Tough With App Developers

Until today many were largely unaware that Twitter had trademarked the term “tweet.” In a TechCrunch article, an email thread between a Twitter API staff member and a developer revealed this small detail, along with Twitter’s feelings on the application’s use of the term “tweet.” Twitter isn’t too thrilled.

To put things in context, the application was being contacted by Twitter because of its user interface, which readily mimics the look and feel of Twitter. Add this to the fact that this particular application is using the term “tweet” and Twitter actually has a problem.

So what’s at the core of the issue? While we have no first hand account outside of this republished email thread, it appears to be the likeness of the application’s user interface along with the use of the trademarked term “tweet” that has Twitter up in arms. So it’s unlikely that other third party applications such as TweetMeme need to worry about their own use of the term “tweet.” But it’s an issue that could benefit from discussion, giving the unique situation in which Twitter has placed itself.
