If there are some of you out there that haven’t learned your lesson yet, please take heed. Posting bad things about your employer on the web is not the brightest idea. And after nearly a decade of mainstream social networking taking place online, it’s high time you all realize that the web in its public form can come back to haunt you. Every time.
Twitter has become the latest place for employers to do a “background check” on potential employees, and even to keep tabs on current employees. We’ve already established MySpace and Facebook as dangerous grounds to post drunken photos if you’re in the education sector, or to complain about the Eagles draft picks. As Twitter continues to permeate every aspect of our global culture, it has become a hotbed for digging up all kinds of dirty dirt.
I know that it’s insanely easy to post a tweet–you’re limited to 140 characters and you can update your Twitter profile with a mere text message from your mobile. The question “what are you doing” is simple enough to answer. And the act of microblogging is in fact a readily overlooked form of communication, especially when it comes to mainstream use. But here’s some food for thought: even those users that have a mere 10 followers can still put their foot in their mouth if their profile is public.
